Happy Happiness Day!

Let me be the first to wish you a very Happy Happiness Day! In case you didn’t know it, today is the first International Day of Happiness, launched by all 193 UN member states. Happiness Day doesn’t mean we’ve arrived at happiness, but it does mean that we’ve recognized that happiness is our goal — and that our societies need to work harder to promote the things that really matter in the 21st century.

The fourth king of the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan led the way 40 years ago, drawing on ancient Buddhist wisdom. Bhutan should pursue Gross National Happiness (GNH) rather than Gross National Product (GNP) like the rest of the world. Since then, Bhutan has been experimenting with a new holistic approach to development that emphasizes not just economic growth but also culture, mental health, compassion, and community. Bhutan is searching for a balanced society.

It’s a worthy search. Bhutan aims to avoid the Easterlin Paradox that grips the US. Professor Richard Easterlin discovered many years ago that America was becoming much richer per person but not happier, at least not according to the direct reports of wellbeing by Americans responding to surveys. This is sobering, indeed. We are threatening the planet with pollution, climate change, and other environmental degradation to chase more and more goods that don’t seem to do so much to really make us any happier.

My colleagues Richard Layard, John Helliwell and I reported on the evidence on happiness in last year’s first World Happiness Report, prepared for a UN meeting on happiness promoted by Bhutan. (We’ll have the Second World Happiness Report out this fall.) We used worldwide survey data to look at the factors that truly make people happy. Income of course matters, but mainly to the poor. When people are hungry, deprived of basic needs such as clean water, health care, and education, and without meaningful employment, they indeed suffer. Economic development that alleviates poverty is a vital step in boosting happiness.

Chris Demuth Advocates “Buddha was born in Nepal”

Chris Demuth talks about Fareed Zakaria’s book The Post-American World where Zakaria is giving absolutely wrong information on Buddha’s birthplace and Mr Demuth advocates not buying the book as it does lie. He was surprised with India’s claim that Buddha was born in India.  Mr Demuth also suggests signing the petition to advocate Buddha was born in Nepal and not in India.

Fareed Rafiq Zakaria is an Indian-American journalist and author. From 2000 to 2010, he was a columnist for Newsweek and editor of Newsweek International. In 2010 he became editor-at-large of Time. He is the host of CNN‘s Fareed Zakaria GPS. He is also a frequent commentator and author about issues related to international relations, trade, and American foreign policy.

Zakaria is the author of few books including The Post-American World. His last two books have both been New York Times bestsellers, and have been translated into over 25 languages.

Fareed Zakaria opened up about his plagiarism scandal in an interview with the New York Times.  He got into severe trouble after he was found to have lifted a paragraph from a recent New Yorker article for a column in Time. He was suspended from that magazine and from CNN.

राष्ट्रियता बिरोधी केही दिग्भ्रमित दिग्भ्रमहरु

त्यसैले लुम्बिनीमा अब छिट्टै केही भएरै छाडछ – खुट्टा कमाउने कमाइ रहुन, भंडुवाहरु भाँडिरहुन, पलायन हुने भैरहुन । हामी आ-आफ्नो स्तर र क्षमताले भ्याएसम्म बुद्ध जन्मस्थल बिषयमा सिर्जित दिग्भ्रम निस्तेज पार्ने कामलाई नागरिकीय दायित्व ठानेर आ-आफ्नो ठाउँबाट जारी राखौं । आस्चर्यजनक सन्नाटाका बीच पनि सबैतिरबाट बातावरण हाम्रै पक्षमा तयार हुँदैछ । शान्तिका प्रतिमूर्ति बुद्धका कारण लुम्बिनी र यस्को वरिपरिको एकीकृत बिकास गर्न बिभिन्न देशका प्रतिष्ठित ब्यक्ति र संस्थाहरुदेखि राष्ट्र संघसम्म अनबरत लागिरहँदा हाम्रोतर्फबाट भने आफूले केही गर्न नसके पनि उनीहरुको चाहना पुरा गर्नमा समेत खासै कार्यतत्परता नदर्शाइनु अत्यन्तै लज्जाजनक हो । संकुचित घेराभन्दा माथि उठन सक्नु आजको आवश्यकता हो । बिस्वले नै महत्व दिइरहेको लुम्बिनी बिकासमा बर्तमानका सकारात्मक पक्षलाई अब पनि सदुपयोग गर्नुको अलावा यो वा त्यो बहानामा ब्यबधान खडा गर्नु भनेको बिस्वकै सामू आफूलाई हास्य पात्रको रुपमा देखाउनुभन्दा बढी केही हुनेछैन । केही गर्न खोज्नेको लागि बिभिन्न स्तरबाट बिभिन्न रुपमा ब्यबधान सिर्जना जतिसुकै गरे पनि लुम्बिनी छिट्टै मेक्का मेदिना र भ्याटिकन सिटी जस्तै संसारभरिका पर्यटकहरुको लागि आकर्षणको केन्द्र बन्ने कुरामा सन्देह छैन । त्यसैले निम्नतम नागरिकीय दायित्व पुरा गर्नुको अलावा गर्न खोज्नेको बाटो ढुक्दै ढुंगाप्रहार गरेर अरुले खुलेयाम र आँफैले आँफैलाई आजीवन मनमनै अपराधी भन्ने बातावरण किन बनाउने?नेतादेखि जंक जनतासम्म भारतको स्वार्थको लागि काम गरिदिने भएकोले नेपालको राष्ट्रियता जति कम्जोर छ भनेर भनिने गरिए तापनि यो सोंचेभन्दा धेरै मजबूत छ । उठान गरिएका संबेदनशील मुद्धाहरुमा मौन बसिदिने अकबर बीरबलको कथाका जस्ता बग्रेल्ती अन्धाहरु मात्रै नभएर नेपालका हितमा हुन लागेका र गरिन लागेका कुनै पनि गतिबिधिमा दिल्लीमा बस्नेहरुलाई हाँच्छ्यू नआउँदै नेपालभित्रै अनेक बहानामा एण्टिबायोटिक नै खानु पर्ने दिग्गज जंक जनताहरु जति देखा परे पनि यस्ले बिशेष अवस्थामा संभाबित खतराबाट जोगिन धेरै हदसम्म सहयोगीको भूमिका निर्बाह गर्नेछ ।

सामान्य भाषामा भन्नु पर्दा राष्ट्रियता भनेको देशको अस्तित्वमाथि देखा पर्ने वा देखा परेका समस्याका कारण सिर्जित चिन्ता, चिन्तन र समस्या समाधानका लागि गरिने बिभिन्न गतिबिधि हुन । यो नि:शर्त, नि:स्वार्थ र स्वत: स्फूर्त रुपमा देखा पर्नु पर्ने हो तापनि आजको स्वार्थपूर्ण समयमा बिभिन्न स्वार्थका कारण त्यसरी देखा नपर्ने मात्रै होइन कि यदाकदा बिभिन्न रुपमा बिभिन्न स्तरबाट राष्ट्रियताको बिषयमा कृयाशिलहरुका खिलाफमा बिभिन्न किसिमले ब्यबधान र भ्रम सिर्जना गर्ने, निरुत्साहित गर्ने, सहभागीहरुलाई निस्कृय र हतोत्सहित पार्ने जस्ता कामहरु समेत हुने गर्छन् । उठान गरिने बिषयबस्तु र यस्मा संलग्न ब्यक्ति र समूह अनुसार बिषयबस्तुले स्थानीय, राष्ट्रिय मात्रै नभएर क्षेत्रीय र बिस्वब्यापी रुप समेत लिन सक्छ र सामना गरिनु पर्ने समस्याले पनि । 

बिदेशी भूमिबाट राष्ट्रियता गतिबिधि देशको माया गर्न भूगोलले छेक्दैन र यो आलेख पछिल्लो चार बर्षमा बिदेशमा बस्ने नेपालीहरुद्धारा गरिएकागतिबिधिहरुमा केन्द्रित हुनेछ । बिदेशमा बस्ने नेपालीहरुका बीच बिशेष गरी करीब चार बर्षदेखि राष्ट्रियताको बिषयमा धेरै गतिबिधि भएका देखिन्छन । भारतद्धारा नेपाली भू-भागमा गरिएको अतिक्रमण र नेपालीमाथि गरिएका बिभिन्नकिसिमका अमानबीय दुर्व्यबहारका बिरुद्ध जून १५, २००९ मा बिभिन्न देशमा कार्यक्रम आयोजना गरिए भने फेसबुक मार्फत बिशेष तयारीका साथ सोही दिन चौबिसै घण्टा बिस्वभर छरिएर रहेका नेपालीहरुले बिरोध कार्यमा सहभागी भए ।

त्यस्को लागि माइ संसार, अनलाइन खबर, नागरिक न्यूज, डिसी नेपाल, नेपाल अरब, नेपाल डायरी, नेपाल समाचार आदिले सहयोग पुर्याए । माइ संसारको ऐक्यबद्धता उल्लेखनीय थियो जस्को सकृयतामा सो दिनको लागि उपयुक्त थुप्रै सामग्री तयार भएका थिए । त्यस्को लगत्तै सार्क क्षेत्रमा देखा परेको शक्ति असन्तुलनका कारण सिर्जित समस्या समाधानलाई सार्क स्तरीय बुद्धिजीबिहरुको सन्जाल तयार गरेर शक्ति सन्तुलनमा केही योगदान दिन सकिन्छ कि भनेर बिभिन्न देशमा छरिएर रहेका बिभिन्न देशका प्रतिनिधिहरु खोज्ने काम शुरु भएको र त्यही सन्दर्भलाई आधार बनाएर माइ संसार लगायत अन्य केही पत्रिकाहरुमा “सार्क बिस्तार प्रसंग र नेपाली परिबेश” लेख समेत प्रकाशित गरिएको थियो । सोही बेला २००९ को सेप्टेम्बरको शुरुतिर अनलाइन खबरमा प्रकाशित “भारतद्धारा नक्कली ‘कपिलबस्तु’ निर्माण” मार्फत अत्यन्तै संबेदनशील समाचारमा भारतमा नक्कली लुम्बिनी र कपिलवस्तु निर्माण कार्य झन्डै असी प्रतिशत संपन्न भैसकेको र २०१२ सम्ममा संपन्न गर्ने किसिमले जोडतोडका साथ काम भैरहेको खबर प्रकाशमा आउँदासम्म पनि त्यससम्बन्धमा नेपालका कुनै पनि निकायबाट कुनै पनि किसिमका आवाज उठाएको नपाईएकोले सार्क स्तरीय बुद्धिजीबिहरुको सन्जालतयारको तुलनामा यस्लाई प्राथमिकतामा पार्नु पर्ने ठहर गरी बिभिन्न देशमा छरिएर रहेका नेपालीहरुले कपिलवस्तु दिवस अभियान (हाल लुम्बिनी-कपिलवस्तु दिवस अभियान) शुरु गर्न पुगे । आफ्नो बिस्वब्यापी सन्जाल बिस्तार गर्दै छोटो समयमा यस्ले गरेका धेरै प्रयासहरुका बीच केही उल्लेख्य उपलब्धीहरु पनि हासिल गरेको छ ।

बुद्ध बर्न इन नेपाल बनाउँदै छु

रमित ढुंगाना, अभिनेता
आफ्नो देशको माया त जहाँ भए पनि लागिहाल्छ नि । तर, प्रवासमा बस्दा अझ बढी लाग्ने रहेछ । हरेक नेपाली एकपटक विदेश जान जरुरी छ, तब मात्रै उसले आफ्नो देश चिन्छ । मेरो अमेरिका बसाइको अनुभव हो यो । 

अमेरिकामा घुम्दा भेटिएका विदेशीले सोध्थे, ‘तिमी कहाँको ?’ उनीहरूलाई भन्थेँ, ‘नेपाल’ । चिन्दैनथे, उनीहरूलाई चिनाउन सगरमाथाको देश क्या भन्थेँ । ‘ए चाइना’ भन्थे । ‘बुद्ध जन्मेको देश थाहा छैन’ भनेर सोध्दा ‘ओ इन्डिया’ भन्थे । उदाहरण जति दिए पनि अधिकांश विदेशी थाहा नभएको संकेत दिँदै टाउको हल्लाउँथे । म अचम्ममा पर्थें, कतिपयलाई सगरमाथा र बुद्ध जन्मेको देश पनि थाहा रहेनछ । पछि, यहाँका नेपालीले नै भनेपछि थाहा पाएँ, अमेरिकाका युनिभर्सिटीमै बुद्ध जन्मिएको देश ‘भारत’ भनेर पढाइँदो रहेछ । रेस मरहठ्ठाले पनि आफूले युनिभर्सिटीमा बुद्ध जन्मिएको देश भारत भनेर पढेको बताएका थिए । संसारलाई सत्य कुरा बताउन ‘बुद्ध बर्न इन नेपाल’ बनाउन लागेको हुँ ।

अभिनेता रमित ढुंगाना केही समययता परिवारसहित अमेरिका बस्दै आएका छन् । त्यहाँका ‘ग्रीनकार्ड होल्डर’ रमित त्यहाँ ‘बुद्ध बर्न इन नेपाल’ नामक फिल्म निर्माणको तयारीमा लागेका छन् । वेलावेला स्वदेश आउने गरेका उनीसँग स्काइपमा गरिएको कुराकानी :
अमेरिकामा के गर्दै हुनुहुन्छ ?
यहाँ कलाकारिताबाहेक केही गर्दिनँ । प्रेमराजा महत, गौरी मल्ल, विक्रान्त बस्नेतसँग मेरो सुमधुर सम्बन्ध छ । उहाँहरूसँगै कार्यक्रमहरूमा जान्छु । यहाँ नेपाली कलाकारको संघ नै छ । संघले बृहत् कार्यक्रम गरिरहन्छ, ती कार्यक्रममा पनि सहभागी हुन्छु । यहीँ मेरा छोराछोरी र भान्जाभान्जी पनि छन् । उनीहरूसँग विभिन्न स्टेट घुम्दै रमाइलोमा दिन बितिरहेछ ।

कलाकारहरू पैसा कमाउनै विदेश जान्छन्, होइन र ?
पैसा त मैले पनि कमाइरहेकै छु नि । यहाँका कार्यक्रममा पारिश्रमिक पाइन्छ । नेपालबाट आउँदा मैले नै अभिनय गरेका फिल्म ल्याउने गरेको छु । ‘पलपलमा’ र ‘जीवनमृत्यु’ फिल्म दुई वर्षसम्म अमेरिकाको २७ वटाभन्दा बढी स्टेटमा देखाएँ । क्यानडामा पनि चलाएँ ।

दर्शक कसरी जुटाउनुहुन्छ त ?
अमेरिकामा नेपाली मिडिया प्रशस्तै छन्, जसका कारण प्रचार-प्रसारको कुनै समस्या छैन । कार्यक्रम हुँदा रेस्टुरेन्टहरूमा पनि ब्यानर झुन्ड्याउँछौँ । सायद आफ्नै भाषाको फिल्मप्रतिको मोहका कारण होला, नेपाली दर्शक फिल्म हेर्न धेरै आउँछन्, मजाको भीड नै हुन्छ । त्यहीँमाथि कतिपय नेपाली दाजुभाइका छोराछोरी नेपाल गएका नै छैनन्, आफ्ना केटाकेटीलाई नेपाली फिल्म देखाउन पाउँदा उनीहरू खुसी हुन्छन् ।
२७ वटा स्टेटमा फिल्म देखाउँदा पैसा त राम्रै कमाइ भयो होला नि ?

टिकटदर १० डलर थियो । नेपाली दाजुभाइको बसोबास धेरै भएका सिटीहरूमा फिल्म देखायौँ । उनीहरूको उपस्थिति पनि सोचेजस्तै पायौँ । जति धेरै दर्शक उति धेरै डलर कलेक्सन हुन्थ्यो । तर, डलर कलेक्सन बढ्ने भयो भन्दा पनि उनीहरूले अब नेपाली फिल्मबारे कस्तो प्रतिक्रिया दिन्छन् भन्ने सोचेर खुसी लाग्दो रहेछ । तर, धेरैपटक छिटै र्फकनुपर्ने बाध्यताले गर्दा ल्याएको फिल्म पनि देखाउन पाएको पनि छैन ।

अमेरिका कसरी पुग्नुभयो ?
अमेरिकामा ‘डिनायल’ नामक फिल्म बन्दै रहेछ । डिनायल इन्टर्नल मुभी थियो, हलमा चलाउने उद्देश्य थिएन । फिल्ममा म्युजिसियन क्यारेक्टरका लागि निर्माता बबले मलाई बोलाए । टेक्सासको डालसमा टाँगिएको नेपाली फिल्मको पोस्टरमा देखेपछि मेरो खोजी सुरु भएको रहेछ । उनले भिसा पठाइदिए, परिवारसहित अमेरिका पुगेँ ।
मेरी दुई दिदीको परिवार १२ वर्षदेखि न्युयोर्कमा छन् । म भने ममी र श्रीमतीसहित अमेरिका पुगेको थिएँ । पहिलोपटक २९ दिन बसेर हामी सँगै फर्कियौँ । त्यो बसाइँमा मैले अमेरिकाको गि्रनकार्ड अप्लाई गरेको थिएँ ।

Nepal was promoted in Pako Festa, Australia

23 February 2013 Geelong, Australia: Geelong, the second biggest city of Victoria in Australia, transformed into a multicultural melting pot as thousands flocked to the thirty-first annual Pako Festa. It incorporated an extravagant street parade featuring around ninety floats and hundreds of performers representing forty-five affiliated ethnic communities and around sixty other community groups and organizations. The street was lined with stalls selling traditional foods and arts and crafts, and nine separate stages in the precinct offer performances of music and dance as well as interactive workshops and exhibitions. Pako Festa has become Victoria’s premier multicultural event, attended by well over hundred thousand people in each of the last three years and estimated to inject close to $2.5 million dollars into the local economy just over the course of the day itself.

Because of very nominal Nepalese in Geelong, Lumbini-Kapilvastu Day Movement Global Coordinator Mr. Ram Kumar Shrestha requested other Nepalese communities living in other cities to use Pako Festa as opportunity to promote Nepal as the country of the Buddha and the Mt. Everest. His idea was for Nepal to take advantage of this big gathering from different counties to try to dismiss misinformation of Buddha’s birthplace. Nepalese Association of Victoria President Bom Yonjan, Nepali Sanchar Managing Director Pramod K Soni and Namaste Nepal News Chief Editor Sabin Thapa, and Lumbini-Kapilvastu Day Movement Victoria Committee were active for necessary input and mobilized community members to participate in the festival to promote Nepal as the country of the Buddha and the Mt. Everest. Nepalese communities promoted Nepal through flags, banners, Nepali music, dance, Nepali dress and stalls. Miss Nepal Australia 2012 Deepashree Shah represented our country with a Kumari dance.
